The Cape Girardeau American Legion junior team had just two hits but still beat Jackson 3-2 Sunday afternoon to win the District 14 Tournament in Chaffee.
Cape, the top seed, improved to 25-11 after going 3-0 in the district tournament. The squad advances to the Zone 4 Tournament, which will be played later this week in either Perryville or Imperial.
Justin Myers pitched all seven innings for the victory, allowing eight hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.
Cape, which never trailed, broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning despite having just one hit, a leadoff single by Kory Kitchen. One run scored on a passed ball and another came home on a balk.
Garrett Stephens had Cape's other hit, a second-inning triple, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Brotherton.
"We're pretty excited," Cape coach Tim Wulfers said. "We've had a good season, and I guess we were living right today, winning with just two hits."
Jackson had battled out of the loser's bracket by beating No. 2 seed Sikeston 2-1 Saturday night.
Cape Legion takes two
The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion team continued its recent strong play by sweeping a doubleheader from host Calvert City, Ky.
Cape prevailed 9-4 and 7-1, giving the 16-21 squad six wins in its last seven games.
Kendal Deason pitched all seven innings of the opener, allowing nine hits, with two strikeouts and one walk. Ty Craft and Sean Bard both had three of Cape's 11 hits, with Craft blasting a three-run homer.
Steve Miinch hurled all seven innings of the nightcap, allowing nine hits, with one strikeout and one walk. Bard had three of Cape's 14 hits. Kendal Deason, Kent Deason, Scott Brueckner and Michael Taylor all had two hits, with Taylor delivering a two-run homer.
Cape's scheduled home game tonight against Metropolis, Ill., has been canceled.
Scott County wins title
Caleb Daughhetee threw a no-hitter in the championship game of the Fighting Squirrels Wood Bat Classic in Charleston, as Scott County American Legion defeated Jackson Senior Babe Ruth 4-0 in the title game.
Daughhetee walked four and struck out two in the seven-inning game.
"We hit probably eight to 10 balls right on the button but right at them, and they fielded the ball well," said Jackson coach Paul Sander, who saw his team fall to 25-7.
Jackson starter Kyle Brown did not allow an earned run in his 5 1/3 innings but suffered the loss. Brown struck out six, allowed five hits and walked five. Brandon Stearns allowed two runs over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Scott County, which had six hits, scored one run in the second and three runs in the sixth.
In the third-place game, Portageville Babe Ruth defeated Century (Ill.) 4-2 in 10 innings.
