The Cape Girardeau 12-and-under Cal Ripken All-Stars baseball team dropped its opener Saturday at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md.
Bel Air, Md., knocked off Cape Girardeau 11-8 after rallying from an 8-7 deficit after two innings.
Adam Pope started for Cape Girardeau but only lasted 1 1/3 innings. Matthew Westrich took the loss in relief. Pope allowed seven runs while Westrich surrendered four.
Westrich led the offensive attack by going 4 for 4 with five RBIs and a run scored. He homered and doubled.
Chase Urhahn went 3 for 4 with two runs scored while Chase Hagerty went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Bel Air struck for three runs in the first but Cape Girardeau answered with three of its own. Bel Air regained the lead with four runs in the second but Cape Girardeau plated five. That was all the scoring for Cape Girardeau.
Cape Girardeau returns to action today against Brick Township, N.J.
