SENATH -- Cape Girardeau's Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team dropped both ends of a key District 14 doubleheader here Sunday afternoon.
Host Senath prevailed 3-1 and 6-4 to improve to 10-0 in district play and 16-2 overall. Cape is 17-9 overall, 7-3 in District 14.
"It was two tough games," said Cape manager Ron Michel. "Senath is good but they're beatable. We're just not hitting the ball consistently right now. Our pitching was good enough."
Ford & Sons managed just 10 hits on the day and also had three errors in each game, which led to five unearned runs.
Jeff Lappe was the losing pitcher in the opener. He allowed six hits while striking out four and walking two.
Cape grabbed a 1-0 first-inning lead but didn't score again. Ford & Sons had only four hits and struck out 11 times. Andy Sweet led Cape with three hits.
Lanson DeBrock gave up just two earned runs but took the loss in the second game. He allowed eight hits while fanning five and walking one.
DeBrock's three-run home run in the second inning gave Cape a 4-0 lead, but again the visitors failed to score the rest of the way. They finished with six hits, no player having more than one.
"We jumped out early in both games but then did nothing the rest of the way," Michel said.
Cape will return to action today when Sikeston visits Capaha Field for a 6 p.m. District 14 doubleheader.
