ST. LOUIS -- The Cape Central swim team placed 10th out of 15 teams Saturday at the extremely competitive Marquette Relays.
The bright spot of the meet came from the 900-yard progression relay team of Eric Yount, Ben Roeger and Jason Owen. The three swimmers nearly broke the meet record of 8:35.24 with a time of 8:35.29 to easily win the race.
Yount swam the first 200 yards free style in a state-qualifying time of 1:54.52. Roeger followed with a 200-yard time of 1:55.10. Owen covered the final 500 yards in 4:55.43.
"The hand-held timer came up with the record, but the computer said we missed it," said Central coach Dayna Powell. "No one was even close to us on this one. We beat the other teams by about 15 seconds."
Those same three swimmers teamed with Jamie Higgins to claim third place in the 400-yard free style relay with a time of 3:26.13. All four swam personal-best times.
Owen Young teamed with Yount, Owen and Roeger to take second in the 300-yard backstroke in a time of 3:01.26.
Powell was encouraged that over the past two Central meets, the Tigers clocked 15 personal best times.
The Central divers placed fourth out of nine teams to earn their best finish ever at the meet.
Nick Sterrett, Tim Chisman, and Andrew Skinner combined for a score of 419.33.
