POPLAR BLUFF -- The Cape Girardeau Central and Jackson girls soccer teams have had some exciting battles over the years, but you'd be hard pressed to find one more thrilling than Wednesday night's contest.
Playing here in the championship game of the Class 4A, District 1 Tournament, Cape Central outlasted Jackson 3-2 in three overtimes.
The Lady Tigers, who improved their record to 19-6-1, advance to Tuesday's sectional game in Fenton. Their opponent has not yet been determined.
Jackson ends its successful season at 15-6-4.
"It was really an exciting game," said Cape Central coach Tom Doyle. "Obviously it's a huge rival and there was a big crowd."
Trisha Klipfel scored an unassisted goal about three minutes into the third 10-minute sudden-death overtime period to end things.
Cape Central had taken a 2-0 halftime lead as Amber Voerg scored twice, with assists from Ashlie Voerg and Klipfel.
It didn't take long for the Lady Indians to pull even as they got two goals in the first three minutes of the second half, including the tying tally that came when the Lady Tigers inadvertently booted the ball in their own net.
Although both teams had good chances, nobody scored again until the third extra period.
