VALMEYER, Ill. -- The McDowell Capahas went extra innings in the first game of a road doubleheader, but made up for it in the second contest with a five-inning, run-rule shortened victory.
McDowell (24-10) beat Valmeyer in the first game 6-4 in nine innings. The second game wasn't nearly as close as the Caps whipped their host 13-3.
Tom Bolen snapped a 3-3 tie in the ninth inning with a two-run home run to dead center field that won the first game. Bolen, Lance Craft, Darrick Smith, Steve Kress and Robert Kern all had two hits in the win. Kress popped a two-run homer in the fifth inning and had three RBIs for the game.
Lance Sherman pitched the first three innings for the Capahas, followed on the mound by Jerry Wolsey, Lanson DeBrock and Kevin Vent.
Kern took over in the second game, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the Capahas. Kern started the rout with a three-run homer in the first inning and added three more singles later in the game.
Kress totaled three hits and three more RBIs and adding two hits for McDowell's were Smith and Ryan Murphy. Shawn Pemberton and Murphy clubbed two-run home runs.
Greg Budt pitched all five innings for the win, allowing five hits and fanning four. Valmeyer scored all three of its runs in the first inning.
The Capahas play a doubleheader at Capaha Field, their last home games of the season, today at 1 p.m against Fairview Heights, Ill.
Chaffee Jr. Legion
BALLWIN -- Chaffee was defeated by host Ballwin 10-6 late Saturday night during the championship round of the Junior American Legion State Tournament.
But Chaffee, which entered the contest as the only remaining undefeated team in the tourney, will have one more chance to win the title today.
Chaffee and Ballwin, each with one tournament loss, will square off at 1 p.m., with the winner earning a berth in the regional tournament to be played in Denver, Colo.
Saturday's loss dropped Chaffee to 33-16 on the season. No further details of the game were available as the Southeast Missourian went to press.
