~ Plaza Tire posted a perfect 6-0 record against Charleston with Friday's 14-5 victory

The tradition-rich Plaza Tire Capahas completed a six-game season sweep of the upstart Charleston Riverdogs with Friday night's 14-5 victory.

But the Capahas were quick to point out that their 6-0 record against the Riverdogs was not nearly as routine as it sounds.

Three of the games went to the wire, the Riverdogs having an opportunity to win each.

"They've really rebuilt that team. [Riverdogs manager] Paul Sander has done a great job," Capahas assistant manager Tom Bolen said. "They should have beaten us a few times."

Even Friday's triumph at Capaha Field saw the Riverdogs have their moments. The Capahas fell behind 4-1 early, but one of their better innings of the season -- a seven-run third -- turned the tide in their favor.

"That's the kind of offense the Capahas have," winning pitcher Kyle Marshall said.

The triumph snapped the Capahas' longest losing streak of the season, two straight defeats suffered at last week's Valmeyer (Ill.) tournament.

"We needed a game like this," Bolen said. "We got beat up at Valmeyer. ... We got shut out the last game. We came back and put the ball in play."

Two former Southeast Missouri State standouts who completed their collegiate eligibility in 2012 spearheaded the Capahas' 14-hit attack.

Kody Campbell went 3 for 3 and walked twice in five plate appearances. He drove in four runs.

Kenton Parmley went 3 for 5 with two doubles and three runs scored. He also reached base five times.

"It was good to see them do that," Bolen said.

Marshall notched his second straight win over the Riverdogs.

Marshall survived one shaky inning -- Charleston's three-run third that gave the Riverdogs a 4-1 lead -- to go the nine-inning distance.

"It was tough. I was a little worried in that one inning," Marshall said. "They put the ball in play. They're a good hitting team."

Marshall allowed nine hits, struck out nine, walked two and hit a batter. He worked the final four frames in shutout fashion and said he had no notion of giving up the ball.

"I came to the field with all intentions of going nine innings," he said. "I knew I had an offense and defense behind me."

Parmley doubled with two out in the first inning and scored on Campbell's RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

Charleston pulled even in the second inning on an RBI single by Ryan Siebert.

The Riverdogs went ahead with three runs in the third inning on three hits, the key blow being a two-RBI single by Brady Wright.

But the Capahas answered, quickly turning that 4-1 deficit into an 8-4 advantage with their seven-run third.

"To put up that seven-run inning, it's a lot different feeling," Marshall said.

The Capahas had four hits in the third, to go along with two walks, a hit batter and a key error that led to two unearned runs.

Mark Hagedorn's two-RBI double, Campbell's two-RBI single and a two-RBI single by Logan Bartels were the key blows.

Plaza Tire remained in control the rest of the way and pulled away down the stretch.

Alex Beussink, who earlier this season pitched a gem against the Capahas, took the loss. He allowed nine runs, seven earned, and eight hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Beussink gave up one run over 8 1/3 innings and did not figure into the decision during a 2-1 Plaza Tire win on June 19 in Charleston.

"He really pitched well against us down there," Bolen said. "We hit the ball well tonight."

Wright went 3 for 4 to lead the Riverdogs. Blake Gaddis added two hits.
