Spotty pitching and a lack of hitting proved fatal to the Plaza Tire Capahas as they dropped a 10-0 decision to Fairview Heights (Ill.) in the third-place game of the Valmeyer (Ill.) 4th of July Baseball Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Capahas pitchers allowed 10 hits and walked 10 batters in the game, while Plaza Tire (21-3) could manage just three hits in the game shortened to seven innings by the mercy rule.

Logan Bartels started for the Capahas and went three innings, allowing seven runs -- all earned -- on six hits, walking six and striking out one. Brant Gray relieved and allowed three runs on three hits and walked four.

Plaza Tire is off until Friday when it hosts the Charleston Riverdogs at 7:30 p.m.

Several regular pitchers were unable to make the trip, which forced Capahas manager Jess Bolen to use position players on the mound.

"What's disappointing to me is not the pitching," Bolen said. "We scored just one run in our last 14 innings with basically the same hitters we've had all year. Hopefully, we can turn that around Friday."
