Capahas conclude 4-0 weekend with 11-2 rout of Perryville

The Plaza Tire Capahas and Perryville played just one game Sunday instead of the scheduled doubleheader.

The abbreviated day of baseball was due to concerns over the high temperatures and humidity. However, it didn't prevent the Capahas from keeping the heat on the Longhorns.

The Capahas posted their third lopsided win of the season over Perryville, romping 11-2 to complete a 4-0 weekend homestand.

"It was a good weekend for us. I'm satisfied," said Capahas manager Jess Bolen, whose team improved to 15-3 and gave him career victory No. 1,399 against just 375 losses in his 45th season.

Perryville also has lost to the Capahas 20-1 and 10-0, both seven-inning, run-rule affairs.

But there were bright spots for the Longhorns, who managed to go the distance this time.

"I'm tickled to death. We played nine innings," said Perryville manager Erv Armbruster, whose second-year squad fell to 0-10. "We hadn't played in two weeks. You can see the mistakes on the field, and they hit the ball well again."

While the Capahas had the majority of the hits -- 14 compared to Perryville's six -- the Longhorns had the day's most impressive blow.

Jose Robles recorded the game's only home run. It was far from cheap as his two-run blast in the fourth inning hit high off the scoreboard beyond the left-field fence.

"It was a bomb," Armbruster said.

The Capahas' offensive star was Sean Bard, who was retired in his first plate appearance but then drilled four straight hits, including three consecutive doubles to finish the game.

Bard drove in five runs. His two-RBI single highlighted the Capahas' five-run third inning as they broke a scoreless tie.

"I felt good," said Bard, who finished with nine hits in the four weekend games.

Even in the sweltering heat?

"You just got to get through it," Bard said with a shrug.

Kenton Parmley added two hits and scored three runs for the Capahas. He had seven hits over the weekend. Eight other Plaza Tire players contributed a hit apiece. The Capahas also received nine walks.

"We'd been struggling a little bit but we finally got the bats going," said Bard after the Capahas scored 21 runs in their past two games.

The Capahas used three pitchers. Jason Chavez and James Leigh each turned in three dominant shutout innings.

Chavez, the starter, allowed one hit and one walk. He struck out three.

Leigh finished up, also allowing a hit and a walk. He struck out five.

Cody Hafeli worked the other three frames. He gave up both runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

"I thought they all threw well," Bolen said.

Robles had two hits. His massive homer pulled Perryville within 5-2 in the fourth inning but the Longhorns did not get any closer.

Bolen substituted liberally, having several pitchers in the field by game's end. He said that was out of necessity due to the heat.

"I didn't make those changes for fun," Bolen said. "We had to get a few guys out of there."

Bolen said playing just one game Sunday was a wise decision, especially since the sides agreed to make up the other contest at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Cape Girardeau. That will mark the Capahas' next action.
