Talk about a late-night celebration. A late start meant the Burger King Capahas didn't leave the baseball field until 1 a.m. Monday morning, but did so happily after clinching the top spot in their pool with a 12-1, eight-inning victory over the Wichita Sluggers at the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas.

Trailing 1-0 after four innings, the Capahas got a bases-loaded single from Josh Haggerty, clearing the bases as the ball skipped by the right fielder.

The Caps added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, getting a run-scoring triple by Kyle James and a two-out single from Cam Womack to take a 5-1 advantage.

The nail in the coffin was a seven-run eighth-inning that sealed the final score.

Womack was 3-for-4 on the day, while James had a double and a triple. Haggerty had a single, a triple and four RBIs.

Cody Heisserer got the win on the mound for the Capahas, pitching all eight innings and allowing just one run on seven hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Johnny McIntyre took the pitching loss for Wichita.

The Sluggers managed their lone run on a two-out line drive in the bottom of the fourth.

The Capahas exploded in the seventh thanks to a bases-clearing, three-RBI triple from Haggerty. Drew Morecraft added to the lead with a two-run home run over the 385-foot sign.

The victory pushed the Capahas to 2-0 in pool play and clinched the head-to-head tiebreaker, giving them a berth in the bracket round and assuring a game Thursday night against an opponent to be determined.

The final pool play game, which will have no effect on the standings, is 7 p.m. today against Salina, Kansas. Manager Jess Bolen said he intends to save his pitching arms by rotating pitchers every inning.
