Notre Dame opened the season by settling some unfinished business from last year.

The Bulldogs hammered Festus, Mo., St. Pius -- the team that ended their season in the district tournament -- 3-0 Thursday night in the Sportsfest soccer tournament at Notre Dame.

Nathan Kolda recorded the shutout for the Bulldogs.

Bryce Willen scored the opening goal 13 minutes in on an assist by Jason Delgado.

Frankie Ellis scored in the second half on a penalty kick after he was taken down in the box after being set up by Blake Essner. Delgado scored the final goal with an assist from Mark Unterreiner.

Notre Dame (1-0) plays Carbondale 6:30 tonight in the tournament's second round.

Jackson 3, Poplar Bluff 1

Jackson rallied from a one-goal halftime deficit to post a victory in its season-opening game at the Sportsfest tournament.

Chris Kraust scored on a header in the first minute of the second half to bring the Indians even with the Mules. Chris Bramlett set up the goal with his run.

Derrick Biri scored an unassisted goal to put Jackson ahead, and Tyler Beussink capped the second-half outburst with an assist by Daniel Forester.

Jackson plays Central 4:30 p.m. today in the second round of the tournament.

Central 5, Marion, Ill. 1

Central scored four unanswered goals to defeat Marion in the the Sportsfest tournament.

Tyson Whiteside put the Tigers (1-0) ahead for good in the second half with a penalty kick, and Sam Bornstein added a goal on a 25-yard free kick midway through the half. Ryan Ponder and Aaron Hutsell added goals late in the game, both assisted by Trevor Beckham.

Lance Altenthal scored the first goal for Central in the first half with an assist from Devon Edwards.

SOFTBALL Notre Dame 8, Delta 0

Sophomore Beth Schnurbusch threw her second shutout of the season, as Notre Dame opened its Sportsfest with a victory.

Schnurbusch (3-0) allowed two hits and struck out five.

Notre Dame (4-0) banged out 11 hits, including a 4-for-4 performance by Whitney Ostendorf, who had a triple and two doubles.

Sarah Cook suffered the loss for Delta (3-2).

Tournament play continues today with Kelly and Park Hills meeting at 4 p.m., followed by St. Pius and Ste. Genevieve at 5:30.

Jackson allowed just a fourth-inning run, but it was enough to drop the Indians to 0-2.

Darla Mangles (0-1) took the loss after allowing nine hits and striking out seven.

Jackson also had nine hits, including two apiece by Leslie Palmer and Erica Kauffman.

Kelly 2, Central 1

A sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning turned into the game-winning play, as Kelly won its season opener at home.

After Stephanie Hency singled with one out, Kelly Essner tried to bunt. Central made a throwing error, and Hency was awarded home on an intererence call as she rounded third base.

Essner pitched three innings of one-hit relief for the win.

Kelsy Holloway took the loss.

CROSS COUNTRY Chester (Ill.) Invitational

The Saxony Lutheran boys cross country team opened the season by placing first in a three-team meet in Chester, Ill.

Brandon Etzold was first overall in the boys race in 18:29. He was followed by teammates Trey Maevers and Peter Winningham.

VOLLEYBALL Woodland Tournament

Bell City and host Woodland advanced to tonight's championship game with semifinal victories on Thursday.

Bell City swept Zalma in two games, 25-23 and 26-24. Woodland needed three sets to stop Leopold, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12.

Bell City and Woodland will meet for the title at 7:30 p.m., while Zalma and Leopold will meet for third at 6:15. Meadow Heights and Greenville square off in the consolation final at 5.

In Thursday's consolation play, Meadow Heights defeated Oak Ridge 25-11, 25-22, and Greenville topped Chaffee 25-18, 26-24.

Dexter 25-25 Jackson 23-23

Jackson fell to 0-2 with a loss at home to Dexter.

Shay Priester had eight blocks for Jackson. Rebecca Martin added 12 digs and five kills, and Natalie Koeper had nine digs.

JV -- Dexter won 14-25, 25-16, 25-11.

Farmington 25-25 Notre Dame 19-17

Notre Dame fell to 1-1 with a home loss to Farmington.

Amber Karnes had two aces, three kills, 21 assists and five blocks for Notre Dame. Amanda Essner added four kills and four blocks, Allison Essner had 22 assists, and Lauren Mehner had eight digs.

JV -- Notre Dame won 25-19, 20-25, 25-17

Freshmen -- Farmington won 2-1

Perryville 25-27 Ste. Genevieve 15-25

Perryville improved to 2-0 with a victory at Ste. Genevieve.

Jodie Amschler had four kills, two digs and an ace for the Pirates. Anna Davis had six assists. Jaime Hacker added five kills and two blocks. Stephanie Landholt had five kills and three blocks.

JV -- Ste. Genevieve won 25-16, 25-15.

Eagle Ridge splits

Eagle Ridge fell to Festus, Mo., Twin Cities 25-20, 25-12 and bounced back to beat Arnold, Mo., People's Christian Academy, 25-15, 22-25, 25-17.

Hallie McConnell had six points in the opening loss, while Mandy Kunz added four points.

Against People's, Chelsey Clark recorded three aces and nine kills. Savannah Irizarry added six assists.
