Ben Brumitt, a Poplar Bluff High School graduate who currently resides in Cape Girardeau, shot a 77 to finish seven strokes off the lead on the par 72 layout. Bryan Norton on Mission Hills, Kan., shot a 70 for the first-round lead. Norton held a three-stroke lead over six players, who all shot 73s.

Brummitt was among among 19 players to shoot opening 77s.

Kent Phillips, a Central graduate and former Southeast Missouri State golfer shot an 80. Central graduate Todd Obergoenner was close behind with an 82.

Dalhousie Golf Club managing member Cord Dombrowski shot an 87, and Jackson graduate Blake McDowell shot an 89.

Stroke play will continue today, with the top 64 advancing to match play.

The match-play portion of the tournament will last four days.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday with a 36-hole final.
