Western Kentucky has been without a conference affiliation in football since leaving the OVC in the 1981-82 academic year when it joined the Sun Belt Conference.
The Hilltoppers have competed as an NCAA Division I-AA independent because the Sun Belt doesn't sponsor football.
Western Kentucky athletics director Lewis Mills said he planned to reach OVC commissioner Dan Beebe by Monday at the latest.
