Today's annual Jackson Invitational high school cross country meet will feature two defending state champions and nearly 20 teams.

Kirkwood's girls won last year's Class 4A state title while Kelly's girls captured the 1997 Class 1A-2A state championship.

"We should have an outstanding meet," said Jackson coach Jim Stoverink.

There will be eight races in all at the Jackson City Park, with a freshmen boys race kicking things off at 10 a.m. The freshmen girls race will start a few moments later.

Sophomore boys and girls will begin at 10:30, followed by junior boys and girls at 11 and senior boys and girls at 11:30.

All of the area teams will join Jackson in participating, including Cape Girardeau Central, Notre Dame, Perryville, Kelly and Advance.
