The potential matchup between Class 1 rivals Bell City and Scott County Central was derailed Monday as Bell City defeated Oran 80-39 and Scott County Central fell to Malden 90-77 in the first round of the Oran Invitational boys basketball tournament.

The regular season game between the Cubs and the Braves was canceled last week with the possibility of the two teams meeting twice in regular season tournaments and once in the postseason.

But third-seeded Malden was too much for No. 6 Scott County, which will play No. 7 Oran tonight at 7:30 p.m.

D.D. Gillespie had a game-high 30 points for the Braves (0-1), Caleb Johnson had 23 and Pershard Owens added 10.

Second-seeded Bell City allowed only 12 points in the second half as it rolled over Oran.

The Cubs (1-1) will take on Malden at 8 p.m. on Thursday in the semifinal round.

Will Bogans led Bell City with 16 points, Nick Niemczyk had 12 and Blaine Stewart and Marty Dames added 10 apiece.

Kody Campbell led Oran with nine points.
