SAN FRANCISCO -- After receiving the National League MVP award, Barry Bonds showed why he could win another one.
Bonds hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning, his fifth home run in the first four games of the season, to lead the San Francisco Giants over the San Diego Padres 3-1 Friday in their home opener.
Reggie Sanders also homered for the Giants, who have won four straight, including a season-opening series at Los Angeles in which Bonds homered twice in the first two games.
After Rich Aurilia was hit by Steve Reed (0-1) leading off the 10th, and Padres manager Bruce Bochy brought in left-hander Alan Embree to face Bonds. With the crowd on its feet, Bonds connected on an 0-1 pitch, sending it over the wall in right.
Pirates 2, Cubs 1
CHICAGO -- Dave Williams gave up a controversial homer to Sammy Sosa, but that's about all Chicago could muster off the Pittsburgh left-hander in its home opener.
Williams pitched six strong innings as the Pirates won for the third time in four games -- their best start since 1996.
Trailing 1-0, Pittsburgh pushed across two runs off Jason Bere (0-1) in the seventh
Phillies 6, Marlins 2
PHILADELPHIA -- Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs, and Brandon Duckworth had a career-high 10 strikeouts to lead Philadelphia over Florida in its home opener.
Benches and bullpens emptied after Marlins reliever Kevin Olsen hit Marlon Anderson with a pitch in the seventh inning. Olsen was ejected, but no punches were thrown.
Julian Tavarez (0-1) gave up six runs and six hits in three innings in his first start for the Marlins he was acquired from the Cubs in the trade that sent closer Antonio Alfonseca and starter Matt Clement to Chicago.
Mets 9, Braves 3
ATLANTA -- Jeromy Burnitz hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs, Mike Piazza added a solo shot and Pedro Astacio (1-0) won in his Mets' debut, allowing three runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings. He had been 2-13 against the Braves -- but 2-2 at Turner Field.
Expos 8, Reds 7
CINCINNATI -- Masato Yoshii (1-0) allowed one run and seven hits in six innings as Montreal built an 8-0 lead and hung on.
Cincinnati scored six runs in the ninth with the help of two errors, before Graeme Lloyd got the save by striking out Todd Walker with runners on first and third.
Brewers 6, D-backs 2
MILWAUKEE -- Glendon Rusch (1-0) pitched a three-hitter in Milwaukee's home opener and homered for the first time in his career, just his seventh hit in 111 career at-bats.
Alex Ochoa homered in the fourth off Rick Helling (0-1), and Jose Hernandez hit a two-run shot off Mike Morgan in the sixth.
