Blues dropped in Wild shootout

~ St. Louis lost in the sixth round of a shootout and has won just twice in its last 13 games.

ST. LOUIS -- Brent Burns' second game-winning goal in two days came on a gimmicky move partly inspired by a TV commercial.

Burns charged in on St. Louis Blues goalie Manny Legace to get him to commit, put on the brakes in front of the goal, glided backward and had a big opening for a forehand drive on the sixth round of a shootout in the Minnesota Wild's 2-1 victory Sunday night.

Burns saw the Ducks' Ryan Getzlaf do it in a game. He said he also saw it once in a commercial.

"My friend Getz, I watched him do it," Burns said. "I didn't really know what to do, so I just tried not to fall."

Marian Gaborik scored his 29th goal for the Wild, who are 3-1 against the Blues this season. Neither team has scored more than three goals in any of the games. Paul Kariya got his 14th for the slumping Blues, who have two wins in their last 13 games and are in 12th place in the Western Conference.

"It's tough, for sure," Kariya said. "We had ourselves in pretty good position to make the playoffs a month ago. It's inexcusable, this is crunch time."

The Blues' Brad Boyes scored in the second round of the shootout and Pavol Demitra tied it on the next shot. Half of the Wild's shooters missed the net before coach Jacques Lemaire gave Burns his first shootout opportunity of the season.

Burns, who has 10 goals and 30 points on the season, scored in overtime in a 4-3 victory over the Islanders on Saturday night.

"First time on the shootout, and he made a great move," Lemaire said. "He's been hot. We made the right choice and he made us look good."

Legace wasn't happy about getting beat on a gimmicky move that Burns likely would not have had time to execute during a game.

"I hate those stops, when they come in on the side and put the brakes on and pull it back," Legace said. "I think you should always keep the forward motion.

"But it was a good move."

Lee Stempniak missed the net on a high drive for the Blues' final chance and Martin Rucinsky lost control of the puck in the fifth round. Wild backup goalie Josh Harding, playing for the first time in seven games, made saves on Andy McDonald, Kariya and David Perron.

"I think it's just like riding a bike," Harding said. "I thought as the game went on, I felt more comfortable and we came out with the two big points."

The Wild nearly ended it with their only shot of the overtime, but Legace thwarted Gaborik on a breakaway and rebound with 13.8 seconds to go. The play was so close it had to be reviewed.

Before the game, a moment of silence was observed for the five people killed in a city hall shooting rampage in suburban Kirkwood, Mo., on Thursday.

The Blues had a 4-1 shots advantage in overtime after the Wild dominated the third period by a 13-2 count. The Blues may have had the best chance in the period, however, with Harding stopping McDonald on a rush off a pass from behind by Kariya.

Gaborik's first goal in four games put the Wild ahead at 5:21 of the first period, a shot from the left circle that beat goalie Legace to the near post. Gaborik has three goals and two assists in four games against the Blues, and also had two good scoring opportunities in the scoreless second period.

The Blues tied it eight seconds after Mikko Koivu was called for delay of game, with Kariya tapping in a rebound for his 14th goal at 12:53 of the first. It was St. Louis' second power-play goal in 15 chances over two games against the Wild this season.

The Wild had killed 30 consecutive power plays over nine games before the goal.

Rucinsky, playing his first game since a shoulder injury at Dallas on Dec. 29, drew the game's first penalty on a hooking call early in the first period. ... Legace has played in nine straight games. He was to have gotten a day off on Saturday, a 6-2 loss at Dallas, but relieved struggling backup Hannu Toivenen in the second period. ...
