Southeast Missouri State University football coach Tim Billings' name has surfaced as a potential candidate for the head coaching job at the University of Wyoming.
But Billings told the Southeast Missourian on Saturday that he has not yet been contacted by Wyoming officials.
"I haven't heard anything from there," Billings said. "I don't expect them to call me."
Billings said he has heard, primarily through other coaches, that some media outlets in Wyoming have mentioned him as a candidate to replace Vic Koennig, who was fired Monday. Koennig has a 5-28 record in three seasons at Division I-A Wyoming, including 1-10 this year with one game left Nov. 30.
Apparently the primary reason Billings' name has been tossed about is his connection to Wyoming athletic director Lee Moon. Moon was the athletic director at Marshall University from 1988 through 1996 and Billings was an assistant football coach at Marshall from 1990 through 1999 before coming to Southeast to take his first college head coaching position.
"Lee always has a list together. I'm sure he's already contacted the people he's interested in," Billings said. "We're good friends, but there is a difference between being good friends and having him wanting you to be his coach."
Asked if he would be interested in the Wyoming job if Moon contacted him, Billings said, "I don't know. I can't answer that. I haven't even thought about it. Right now I'm excited about being at Southeast."
Billings led the Indians to an 8-4 record this season, his third at Southeast. That's the program's best record since 1969 and its first winning mark since 1994.
