Bell City edged host Leopold in three sets Friday in a battle of Class 1 district volleyball champions from a year ago.

The Cubs recorded a 25-27, 25-23, 25-21 victory in front of a standing-room only crowd.

Megan Slagley had eight kills and 13 digs for Bell City (19-1), while Jessica Abner added seven kills and three blocks, Jenny Lathum had five kills and four blocks, and Rachel Spears had six kills and five blocks.

Leopold (13-2) was led by Cassie Seiler's 28 assists and nine digs, and Janice Jansen's 10 kills and 14 digs. Kelly Eeftink had 13 digs, and Jenny Vandeven had nine kills.

"Their defense was good," said Leopold assistant Sandy Davis. "They're just a good, solid, all-around team.

"We played well. We made some mistakes at crucial times, but that's something we have to work on is staying aggressive."

JV -- Leopold won 25-13, 22-25, 25-22.

Woodland 25 25 Oran 13 12

Woodland improved to 15-4-1 with an easy home victory.

Lauren Johnson had five kills and served 11 points for the Cardinals. Chelsie Morris served 12 points, including four aces, and Jessica Santi added three kills.

JV -- Woodland won 25-15, 19-25, 25-8

New Salem wins two

New Salem Baptist of Marble Hill improved to 9-0 with two victories Friday night at Christian Outreach.

New Salem beat Liberty 25-14, 25-10 and beat PCA 25-22, 25-16.

Against Liberty, Laura Poole dished out 19 assists, while Martha Poole and Sarah Green each had seven kills.

Against PCA, Laura Poole had 18 assists, Martha Poole had eight kills and Green had seven.

BOYS SWIMMING SLUH 133, Notre Dame 45

The Bulldogs lost at state power St. Louis University High.

Sophomore Logan Bollinger had the only first-place finish for Notre Dame, winning the 100 butterfly in 59.23.
