The Plaza Tire Capahas failed to provide any support for starting pitcher Trey Bazzell on Tuesday.
The host Fairview Heights Redbirds posted a 3-0 victory after scoring two runs off Bazzell over his six innings.
"He really pitched well, and I wish we could have got him some runs," Capahas manager Jess Bolen said. "He did a good job."
Bolen said he limited Bazzell to about 70 pitches because the 20-year-old is coming back from surgery. Bazzell struck out one and walked two while allowing four singles. Only one of the two runs he gave up was earned.
Trent Wise pitched the final two innings. He struck out three and walked four. The run he allowed was unearned.
The Capahas (9-2) had chances to score but couldn't come up with the big hit.
"We had runners on first and second, nobody out twice and just couldn't score," Bolen said. "One time we tried to bunt, couldn't bunt, bunted foul twice then hit into a double play. You always hit into a double play if you can't bunt, it always seems like. It's one of them things that happens."
Brandon Bennett led the Capahas with three hits, including a double.
The Capahas, who usually use wood bats, decided to go with aluminum Tuesday.
"We swung the collegiate aluminum, but it didn't do no good," Bolen said. "I did that because we really needed to score some runs because I knew they had a really good offensive team tonight. But our pitching was really good, so it evened itself out."
The Capahas return to action today when they travel to Perryville. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
