SENATH — The Senath-Hornersville boys and girls basketball teams officially began the season on Friday with the popular “Meet The Teams” event.
The boys squad features a new coach in Kyle Moore, who replaces Kurt Penn. Nicki Pierce will coach the girls team.
“I feel like everything went well,” Moore said. “It’s a good time for our student-athletes to be recognized. I know our boys and girls appreciate the love and support to kick off our respective seasons.”
“Meet The Teams” is a well-attended community event, and the stands on both sides were packed with spectators.
The Delta Dunklin Democrat sports editor posted three videos currently available on the newspaper’s Facebook page.
The evening’s docket featured a 3-point shooting contest, with Jada Burlison and Christian “Pookie” Garza reaching the intergender finals. Garza won the overall title by one point.
Senath-Hornersville’s cheerleaders, under the direction of coach/sponsor Amber Chandler, performed a routine.
The cheer squad features three seniors in Morgan Chandler, Alondra Arenas and Addie Lane.
Senath-Hornersville’s boys team will participate in the Gideon jamboree tonight, and will return for the Bulldog Classic beginning Nov. 27 — the start of the regular season.
Gideon athletic director/head boys basketball coach Keenan Buchanan said there will be a seeding meeting on Wednesday to determine the tournament bracket.
The boys squad will feature plenty of senior leadership this season in Amador Luna, Mason Williams, Eduardo Castillo, Angel Ledezma, Jackson Bishop and Garza.
Last year under Penn’s guidance, the Lions finished with an 18-9 record — before they were ousted by eventual Class 3 state champion New Madrid County Central 74-45 in the second round of the Class 3 District 1 tournament.
The boys scrimmage featured plenty of end-to-end action, with the teams combining for nearly 50 points during the 12-minute period.
The girls were under .500 during the 2022-23 campaign (10-13), losing to New Madrid, 46-34, in the opening round of the Class 3 District 1 tournament.
Senath-Hornersville’s girls will open the season on Nov. 27 with the Al Jackson Classic at Hayti.
The girls totaled nearly 40 points in their scrimmage.
