Lance Schlick
School: Jackson
Class: Junior
Sport: Wrestling
Weight class: 125 pounds
Coach: Steve Wachter
Week report: Schlick won two individual tournament titles and helped the Indians to their 48th consecutive dual victory with a busy and undefeated week of wrestling. After defeating two state qualifiers to win his weight class in the rugged Jefferson Helias Tournament the previous weekend, Schlick came back this weekend to win his second straight Tiger Classic individual title. Last year he won the 103-pound title.
On the season: Coming off a third-place state finish last year wrestling at 103 pounds, Schlick has been just as effective with his move up to 125 pounds. He's currently undefeated with a 14-0 mark.
Coach's comments: "Lance has done real well. He beat three all-state wrestlers this week. He had a really good spring and summer and his attitude in the weight room has been outstanding. He's working toward the goal of being an all-state wrestler."
Schlick's comments: "I'd love to win state, but I'm looking more to place and do better than I did last year. The main difference (wrestling at a heavier weight) has been my opponents' maturity level, but it hasn't bothered me too much yet."
Renee Kaempfe
School: Perryville
Class: Senior
Sport: Basketball
Position: Center
Coach: Vicki Lohmann
Week report: The Lady Pirates completed a busy week with Kaempfe recording some dominating performances. The 6-foot Kaempfe averaged 20.8 points and nine rebounds as Perryville went 2-3. Kaempfe started the week with 26 points in a win over Crystal City and after two sup-par performances in the HealthSouth Classic exploded for back-to-back 30-point outings. Kaempfe totaled 33 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Scott County Central and ended the week with 31 points and 14 rebounds in a loss to Visitation.
On the season: Kaempfe -- a two-year starter -- leads the 6-4 Lady Pirates in scoring and rebounding, averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds a game.
Coach's comments: "I knew at the beginning of season Renee could put up big numbers and she really had some big nights this week. I was kind of impressed with her numbers after some of these games. Renee's not really a dominating inside player, but she's got good hands, a nice shooting touch and she's very coachable."
