Olympic medalist to appear in Cape

Chris Thompson, who won a bronze medal in the 1,500 freestyle at the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia, will conduct a swimming clinic 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Central Municipal Pool.

The clinic will be hosted by the Gator Swim Team and coach Steve Franklin. The cost is $20.

Thompson has won seven national championships.

The Gators also will open their fall short-course season this weekend with a dual meet in Paducah, Ky. The Gators are conducting team placement tryouts 4 to 6 p.m. any afternoon through December at Central Pool.

Leaders remained same in Corporate Games

TG Missouri led Division I of the 2004 Corporate Games, and Yellow Book USA maintained the top spot in Division II heading into the final days.

The multi-event, Olympic-style event sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department concludes Friday evening.

TG Missouri won the 6-on-6 volleyball competition Monday to protect its lead following a second-place finish in the relay race that same day. But the lead tightened Tuesday night when Proctor & Gamble Blue won the basketball hotshot event.

TG Missouri, of Perryville, had 465 points to 455 for Proctor & Gamble Blue and 420 for Proctor & Gamble Green heading into Wednesday's events at Central Municipal Pool. P&G Green won the relay race as well as bowling and cardio relay over the weekend; P&G Green won soccer on Saturday.

Yellow Book USA won only soccer over the weekend but was clinging to first with 425 to 400 for Division of Youth Services and 315 for defending champion MedAssets.

DYS won bowling and 6-on-6 volleyball over the weekend, while Bob Evans Restaurant won the relay race. DYS added wins in 6-and-6 volleyball and basketball hotshot earlier this week.

Mets, Orioles split in fall baseball

The league-leading Mets and Orioles split a doubleheader Saturday in the SEMO Fall Baseball League for boys ages 15 to 18.

After the Orioles won 7-3 in the opener, the Mets won the second game 5-3. The teams both are 3-1, just ahead of the Angels, who improved to 4-2 by sweeping the Rockies.

For the Orioles, Josh Taylor had two hits in each game and struck out nine batters to get the pitching victory in the opener. Lance Young, who had two hits in the nightcap, picked up the save.

For the Mets, Sam Sander picked up the win and Cory Chamberlain notched the save in the second game. Luke Crader, Josh Boyer and Wes Forshee each had two hits in that contest.

The Angels were led Saturday by Brand Fields, who was the winning pitcher and the opener, a 6-4 decision, and added three hits in a 10-0 second game romp. Caleb Daughhetee also had three hits.

The league continues play on Saturdays at Jackson Legion Field through late October.

McCune aces No. 6 at Kimbeland

Sam McCune scored his second hole in one recently at Kimbeland Country Club. He used a 6-iron to ace the par-3, 150-yard sixth hole.

Witnesses were Gordon Feeney, Sarah Thompson and Vicki Miller.
