Scorpions rugby posts first win vs. Ramblers
The Kohlfeld Scorpions rugby team defeated the St. Louis Ramblers, a Division I club, for the first time Saturday in a series that dates back more than 30 years. Scorpions captain Joey Hann attributed the 38-15 victory to the club's new defensive strategies and skills passed down from now-retired coach Dr. Tim Joplin.
Scoring for the Scorpions were Alan Kloss, Scott Johnston, T.J. Ebner, Marc Lineberry and rookie winger Matt Koetting. Bryan DePyper was chosen as the team's defensive player of the game.
Orioles, Mets lead SEMO fall baseball league
The Mets swept a doubleheader from the Angels on Sept. 11 in the first weekend of the SEMO Fall Baseball League, while the Orioles swept the Rockies this past Saturday.
Wes Forshee and Sam Sander were the winning pitchers for the Mets in their doubleheader sweep. Cory Chamberlain saved the first game and Josh Boyer picked up the save in the nightcap. Forshee had three hits on the day.
The Dodgers and Rockies split a doubleheader that weekend. Jordan Kimball had four hits for the Dodgers.
The Orioles took two from the Rockies on Saturday, as Trevor Irwin and Lance Young posted the victories. Both pitched complete games. Young's effort was a 12-strikeout shutout.
The Angels won two from the Dodgers on Saturday. Rusty Hendricks and Andrew Deere picked up the wins. Deere allowed one run in the nightcap after the Angels had overcome a five-run deficit for a 7-5 win in the opener. Kimball again had four hits.
The leaue has five teams of boys ages 15 to 18 and will play on Saturdays through mid-October at the Jackson American Legion field.

TG Missouri, Yellow Book lead Corporate Games
TG Missouri started fast in the 2004 Corporate Games, claiming a 60-point lead after seven events on the first two days of competition. The event, sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, continues through Oct. 1 with Olympic-style competitions.
TG Missouri, competing in Division I for companies with more than 99 employees, won the horseshoes, tug of war, trail-running relay and billiards events to compile 255 points. TG Missouri Corporation is a Toyota Affiliate Supplier in Perryville, Mo.
Proctor & Gamble Blue is second with 195 points with wins in flag football and golf.
Four different teams have wins in Division II, but Yellow Book USA is on top of the standings with 205 points following wins in tug of war and flag football. Defending champion MedAssets is second at 175 with a win in the banner contest and three second-place finishes. The Division of Youth Services has three wins -- horseshoes, trail-running relay and billiards -- and is third at 170.
The Corporate Games continue with softball today at Shawnee Park. Soccer is set for Saturday at Shawnee. Bowling and the cardio relay are Sunday.

Vandeven picks up two top finishes
Irv Vandeven had first- and second-place finishes in two Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association events over the weekend.
Vandeven and Rick Garland placed first Sunday at Scott City Park. Ron LeGrand and Doris Stubenrauch finished second with Rose Kern and Bob Burnett third.
Vandeven and Lester Powell were second among five teams Saturday at the Backyard Horseshoe Club in Glenallen, Mo. Danny Williams and Cori Stoverink took first place. Bob Piper and Dawn Stone were third.
In a 16-team meet Sept. 12 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oran, Mo., Randy Grady and Larry Burford finished first with Ron LeGrand and Sheila LeGrand second. Henry Trankler and Cori Stoverink finished third.
