Corporate Games begin,

continue through Sept. 30

Seven teams began competing Sunday in the Corporate Games, an Olympic-style event that allows teams from employee-based organizations in the region to battle in events for a variety of athletic and not-so-athletic events.

The competition, coordinated by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, began with opening ceremonies and a banner contest Sunday at the Osage Community Centre.

Competition continues through Sept. 30.

Today's events include golf at the Cape Jaycees Municipal Golf Course and billiards at Nick's.

On the slate Tuesday is 6-on-6 volleyball at Osage Community Centre and darts at Nick's. Softball will be played Wednesday night at the Shawnee Park Sports Complex.

TG Missouri is back to defend its title in Division I, for companies with more than 100 employees. Procter & Gamble, which tied TG Missouri in points but lost the tiebreaker of first-place finishes, also has a team in Division I.

New teams in the field this year are Southeast Missouri Hospital in Division I and Big River Telephone in Division II, which is for companies with fewer than 100 employees.

The defending champion of Division II, YellowBook USA, did not enter this year's event.

Scorpions open season

with tournament title

The Kohlfeld Scorpion Rugby Club opened its season by winning the fifth annual Ruggerpollooza tournament in Carbondale, Ill., defeating the top-seeded SIU Salukis 22-0 in the title match.

The Scorpions pounded Murray State 44-0 in the first round of play. The Scorpions advanced through the second round and into the title match when the Memphis Blues Rugby Club forfeited due to injuries.

Against SIU, the Scorpions scored twice in the first five minutes of the match and then turned in a strong defensive effort.

Scorpion scorers for the day were Tim Bosler, Josh Goodrich, Joey Hann, Scott Johnston, Alan Kloss, Jeremy Mabrey and Jason Riley. Kevin Tucker provided the point-after-kicks. Riley was named defensive player of the tournament, while Goodrich was named the offensive player.

McKuin, Drerup, Hosea, Johnson win tourney

Ben McKuin, Dennis Drerup, Ken Hosea and Bryan Johnson scrambled a 57 to claim the championship flight of the Autumn Open golf tournament Saturday at the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.
