Southeast football newcomers report today

Southeast Missouri State University's football program will welcome about 40 newcomers today. That group includes freshmen, junior-college transfers and four-year transfers.

The newcomers will have their first workout in shorts at 5 p.m. Saturday. About 50 veterans will report Monday, with the Indians' first full-squad practice scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Southeast football team will benefit from raffle

The first annual Indian Insider Reverse Raffle, held Aug. 24 at the A.C. Brase Arena Building, will benefit the Southeast Missouri State University football program.

The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. with an open bar, hors d'oeuvres and a dance band, Infinity, from Nashville, Tenn.

Door prizes from local businesses will be given out and there will be cash prizes of $3,500, $1,000 and $500.

Tickets, limited to 295, are $100 per person or $150 per couple. Corporate sponsorships, which include five tickets and advertising, are available for $1,000.

Heartland Nationals win pair at national tournament

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Heartland Nationals, an area girls fast-pitch softball team, won two pool games Thursday as the 14-and-under National Tournament began play.

The Heartland Nationals (7-0) blanked Dewitt County, Texas, 7-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Sarah Cook, then defeated host Clay County, Ind., 8-5.

Cook struck out 11 batters and walked no one in the six-inning win over Dewitt County. The Nationals banged out 10 hits as Katie Daniel went 3-for-4 and Kegan Orr went 2-for-3. Both players had a double and two RBIs.

Whitney Horrell picked up the win against Clay County, allowing three hits in six innings. She struck out four and walked three.

Sarah Dooley, Cook, Tori St. Cin and Mindy Hendrix all had two hits for the Nationals, who had 11 hits overall. St. Cin had a triple and a double while driving in three runs. Dooley, who had a double, and Cook both had two RBIs.

The Nationals complete pool play today, facing Liberty Rec, Ind., at 8 a.m. and Homewood, Ill., at 10 a.m.

Rouse finishes ninth at Cadet Nationals

Cody Rouse, 15, of Fruitland, Mo., placed ninth out of 74 wrestlers last week at the Cadet Nationals in Fargo, N.D.

Rouse, who will be a sophomore at Jackson High School, went 5-2 in the 140-pound division of the freestyle competition for 15- and 16-year-olds.

Rouse also recently competed for Team Missouri in the Dual Cadet Championships held in Greeley, Colo. Rouse went 2-2 in competition, helping Missouri to its best finish ever, fifth, in a field of 23 teams.

Rouse was a state qualifier for Jackson in the 130-pound division at the Missouri High School Wrestling Championships during his freshman year.

Cook earns academic All-American award

Cape Girardeau Central High School graduate Justin Cook, who spent the past two seasons as a pitcher on the Shawnee (Ill.) Community College baseball team, made the 2002 Distinguished Academic All-American team for junior colleges.

A 2000 Central graduate, Cook will attend Southeast Missouri State University on a community college scholarship.

Sikeston hosts Junior Babe Ruth Midwest region event

Games begin Saturday in the Midwest Plains Regional Tournament for Junior Babe Ruth teams in Sikeston, Mo., leading to a 10 a.m. championship game Wednesday. All games are at VFW Stadium.

The event's eight teams are from Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado, Nebraska and North Dakota.

The winner advances to the World Series in Clifton Park, N.Y.

A banquet at 7 p.m. today at Sikeston Junior High School will kick off the event. Tickets are $10.

Elfrinks, Kern win in horseshoe league events

Tyler Elfrink was on a pair of winning teams in Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association events Sunday in Jackson.

Elfrink and Rose Kern were winners in one event over Irv Vandeven and Karen Jansen. Third was Debbie Miller and Cori Stoverink.

In the other event, Tyler and Sondra Elfrink won with Edgar Stoverink and Melody Williams second. Third was Larry Burford and Beth McClain.

Cape youngsters receive honors at summer camp

Cape Girardeau's Jordan Sheets and Joda Holloway were recently recognized for their accomplishments at Kanakuk Camp, a Christian sports camp in Branson, Mo.

Sheets won the "All Around Athlete Award" and Holloway was runner-up. One Hundred and eighty campers from over ten states attended the camp. Both boys will be sixth-graders at Trinity Lutheran School.

Johnson wins Chip-A-Ways event at Jaycee course

Dee Johnson won "A" flight with a 40 at the Chip-A-Ways' weekly event at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Fay Harris carded a 52 to win "B" flight. Mary Van Cleve posted the low-putt total with 13 and Lillian Angle finished first in play of the day -- "Four Hole Draw."

Chip-A-Way members Sharon Dow and Deanna Peterman placed first in "B" flight in a two-lady scramble in Dexter, Mo.
