Gibsons earn medals in Junior Olympics

Three area brothers -- Greg, Ryan and Matt Gibson of Jackson -- competed in swimming at the 40th annual National Junior Olympics in Virginia Beach, Va., earlier this month.

The field consisted of 443 swimmers of American descent, including some who came to the event from foreign countries.

Ryan and Matt Gibson both won first-place honors.

Matt Gibson, 10, achieved his first AAAA time and also won first place in the 50- and 100-meter butterfly events; third in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle; fourth in the 200 freestyle relay; fifth in the 100 freestyle; and sixth in the 200 individual medley.

Ryan Gibson, 14, placed first in the 200 freestyle and the 200 butterfly; second in the 200 IM, the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.

Greg Gibson, 16, placed third in the 400 freestyle relay, fifth in the 200 freestyle relay and seventh in the 200 backstroke.

Graham wins medalist; Wink wins play of day

Jean Graham was the medalist Tuesday in the J.C. Chip A Ways play at the Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Fern Trickey and Glenda Franklin tied for B flight honors.

Bev Wink won the play of the day, which was the longest putt on No. 4. Carolyn Blechle won low putt honors.

* The team of Jo Ann Williams, Sharon Dow, Jan Keefe and Deanna Peterman won the championship flight of the ladies tournament in Piedmont, Mo., on Tuesday. They posted a score of 64.

Keys placed 114th in national bowling event

Bowler Tyler Keys of Chaffee didn't make the cut to the final day of series bowling at the Teen Masters national tournament in Orlando, Fla., earlier this month.

Keys was eliminated after the first two days -- bowlers rolled six games the first three days before getting into a bracket format -- when he compiled a 2,113 pin total in his first 12 games.

The field was cut to 65 boys -- the cut line was a 184.08 average -- for the third round of qualifying, which took place at Boardwalk Entertainment Center.

Keys was tied for 86th at 1,101 pins after the first day.

He finished the event with a 176 average.

Jake Peters, 17, of Decatur, Ill., won the event at the Sound Stage 33 Arena at Universal Studios Orlando. The finals will be televised on ESPN2 on Oct. 16.
