Nationals improve to 2-1 at national tourney

The Heartland Nationals 12-and-under softball team improved to 2-1 in poop play Sunday in the Babe Ruth 12U World Series.

The Nationals, a all-star team made up of players from Kelso, New Hamburg an Oran, handed Mount Olive, N.J., its first loss in pool play, rallying for an 11-7 victory. Mount Olive finished pool play with a 3-1 record.

Only the top three teams in each five-team pool advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The Nationals can advance out of pool play with a victory over Londonberry, N.H.

Katie Bond led the Nationals with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, which included a triple and an RBI. Nine other Nationals had a hit apiece in a 12-hit attack. Eight of the hits came in a seven-run second. The big inning came after Mount Olive had grabbed a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the first.

The Nationals opened the second with eight straight hits off losing pitcher Arielle Budney, who was lifted with nobody out.

Mount Olive closed the gap to 7-6 with two run in the fourth, but the Nationals responded with four runs in the fifth.

Halle Woodfin pitched six innings for the Nationals to claim the win. She allowed eight hits, walked three and did not strike out a batter. Wodfin helped her own cause with a triple. She was also helped out by her defense, which turned two double plays and committed just one error. Mount Olive made five errors in the game, including three in the second inning.

Miles cards ace at Dalhousie

Neil Miles of Advance, Mo., carded his first hole in one on Sunday at Dalhousie Country Club.

Miles, playing with his 6-year-old son Carson, used a 5-iron to ace No. 8, a par 3 playing 190 yards. The hole in one occurred just hours after Miles joined the club.

Dalhousie wins match against Paducah C.C.

Dalhousie Golf Club defeated the Paducah (Ky,) Country Club in 36 holes of match play Saturday at Dalhousie.

Dalhousie posted a 19-5 win in the competition, which consisted of nine holes apiece of four-ball and chapman and 18 holes of singles match play. Dalhousie won four-ball 5-1, chapman 4 1/2-1 1/2, and singles 9 1/2-2 1/2.

Members of the Dalhousie team were Scott Roe, Mark McDowell, Ben Cantrell, Trae Thrower, Ken Swinford, Greg Howard, Jeff Patton, Ben Brumitt, Ron Seabaugh, Mark Unger, Tim Coad and Jim Riley.
