Cape County Cherokees advance in national event

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Out of an original field of 108 baseball teams from 23 states and Canada, the Cape County Cherokees are one of 12 squads left in the USSA World Series for 11-year-olds.

The Cherokees improved their tournament record to 7-1 with two wins Thursday, beating the Plano (Texas) Pride 9-7 and the PlanoDragons 12-10.

Dilan Drury hit a grand slam and Christopher Roth was the winning pitcher against the Pride. Nick Stroer homered and Matt Crader got the win against the Dragons.

The Cherokees will play the Kansas City (Mo.) Mustangs at 8 a.m. today in the final round of 12. A win would put them in the quarterfinals later today.

Johnson win Chip-A-Ways event at Jaycees course

Dee Johnson won 'A' flight with a 40 at the Chip-A-Ways weekly event at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Fay Harris carded a 52 to win 'B' flight. Mary Van Cleve posted the low-putt total with 13 and Lillian Angle finished first in play of the day -- "Four Hole Draw."

Chip-A-Way members Sharon Dow and Deanna Peterman placed first in 'B' flight in a two-lady scramble in Dexter, Mo.
