Hindman, Garner lead Heartland at AAU meet
Cassie Hindman and Alyssa Garner of Heartland Gymnastics each finished first all-around at the AAU national championships in Rochester, Minn.
Hindman was first in Level 5 for 11-year-olds with a score of 37.2. She won the uneven bars, balance beam and floor.
Garner was first in Level 5 for 10-year-olds with a score of 36.425. She won the vault, uneven bars and balance beam.
Macie Borgfield, Kanaan Rhodes and Hannah Litwicki had second-place finishes.
Borgfield was second in Level 3 for 8-year-olds. She won the balance beam.
Rhodes was second in Level 4 for ages 14 and 15. She was second in all four events.
Litwicki was second in Level 5 for age 12. She won the balance beam.
Also from Heartland: Alyssa Kimmich was fifth in Level 3, age 8; Cassidy Shelton was 11th in Level 3, age 10; Bailey Watkins was fourth in Level 3, age 8; Alexis Phillips was fourth in Level 4, ages 6 and 7; and Alexia Phillips was fifth in Level 5 for 11-year-olds.
The event drew more than 800 competitors and was open to gymnasts who attained all-around scores of 28.0 or better at two qualifying meets and qualified through the regional championship meets.
The Cal Ripken Baseball 11-and-under district tournament will begin Friday in Kelso, Mo.
Opening games are scheduled for 6 and 8 p.m. Friday. The tournament continues at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and the championship round of the double-eliminaton event is 2 p.m. Sunday.
All-star teams from Cape, Jackson, Chaffee/Scott City and Scott County will compete for the district title and a berth in the state tournament in Sikeston later this month.
Aaron Waters, 13, of Sikeston, won the Olympic sparring and point sparring divisions for the 125-pound weight class of 12- and 13-year-old boys at the AAU national championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Waters also was third among 26 competitors in forms.
