Stoverink tops SEMOhorseshoe circuit
Cori Stoverink teamed up with Virgil Schreckenberg for a second-place finish in the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Assocation's Tournament of Champion on Sunday, capping a year in which he earned the most points throughout the season.
Stoverink ended up on top of the points standings with 60. Danny Williams was second with 32 and Randy Grady third with 30.
Tyler Elfrink and Ron LeGrand formed the first-place team in the season-ending Tournament of Champions, which was hosted by the American Legion in Benton, Mo.
Brad Miller and Larry Glastetter placed third.
The association honored two longtime members for induction into its hall of fame: Dwain Rains and Richard Conley.
Kohlfeld Scorpions lose rugby match at home
The Kohlfeld Scorpions suffered their first home loss Saturday, falling 53-5 to the St. Louis Bombers, defending champions of the Western Rugby Union.
Alan Kloss was the MVP of the game for the Scorpions.
Kohlfeld will host the Little Rock Rugby Club, the Ozark Rugby Union champions, 1 p.m. Saturday at Arena Park.
There is no admission charge.
Mets grab lead in fall baseball league
The Mets swept a doubleheader from the Dodgers on Saturday to grab the lead in the SEMO Fall Baseball League.
The Mets won 13-0 and 16-1. Sam Sander pitched a one-hitter in the nightcap to follow Josh Boyer's one-hitter in the opener. Cory Chamberlain had four hits in the second game. Luke Crader and Dustin McCann had four hits in the two games.
The Angels fell one-half game behind the Mets by splitting a doubleheader with the Orioles. The Angels rallied for a 7-5 win in the opener, as Trevor Irwin picked up the win. The Orioles rallied for a 7-6 win in the nightcap.
Irwin ended the day with three hits.
The regular season concludes Saturday with teams seeded for a postseason double-elimination tournament.
The Dodgers (1-5) play the Orioles (4-2) in a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. at Legion Field in Jackson. The Mets (5-1) and Rockies (1-5) follow with a twinbill at 2:30 p.m. The Angels (5-3) have a bye.
