Babe Ruth tournament will light its fuse Friday

The annual Pop's Pizza Firecracker Classic baseball tournament begins Friday and will feature 12 pool-play games in the first two days.

Charleston, Oran, New Madrid, Dexter, Chaffee, Steele and Cape Girardeau will be represented in an eight-team field.

Games begin at 10 a.m. on Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday; and the championships begin at 1 p.m. Sunday. Games will be at Capaha Field and Central Junior High School.

The winner of each pool will meet in the championship game at 4 p.m. Sunday at Capaha Field.

The Cape A's, formerly the Yankees, are the two-time defending champions after defeating Dexter each of the past two years.

"They've got a pretty good rivalry going," tournament director Jeff Glenn, who was the coach of the Yankees from 1999 to 2002, said.

Dexter won the tournament four years ago.

"My prediction is that you'll see a whole lot of good baseball this weekend,"Glenn said.

Peterman, Williams tie for Chip-A-Ways title

Deanna Peterman and Linda Williams tied for medalist at the Chip-A-Ways weekly event at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Evelyn Riley was the B flight winner. Waunita VanDyke and Mary Van Cleve tied for play of the day, which was secret partners. Carolyn Blechle and Bev Wink tied for low putt.

Vandeven and Burford win SEMOHorseshoe event

Irv Vandeven and Larry Burford won the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association event at the Backyard Horseshoe Club in Glenallen on Saturday.

Randy Grady and Terri Rose won Sunday's Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association event at the American Legion building in Benton.
