The Jackson Post 158 Junior American Legion baseball team claimed the District 14 tournament title Sunday with a 20-16 victory over Cape Girardeau Post 63 in Sikeston, Mo.
Jackson avenged a 16-5 loss to Cape on Saturday night that forced the if-necessary championship game in the double-elimination tournament. Jackson (23-9) advanced to the zone tournament which begins Thursday in Perryville, Mo.
In Sunday's game, Jackson broke an 8-8 deadlock when it moved ahead for good with a five-run fifth. Jackson added six more runs in the top of the sixth for a 19-10 lead.
Jackson reliever Trey Parker pitched four innings for the victory. Justin Landewee, who also pitched four innings, took the loss for Cape.
Andrew D'Amico led Jackson with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate that included a triple and six RBIs. Dakota Zoellner went 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs.
Christian Cavaness, who was 3 for 4, paced Cape (19-16) with two home runs and four RBIs. Justin Modglin added three hits, while Aaron Wendel and Troy Gardner both had two hits. Wendel finished with three RBIs.
On Saturday, Logan Henson picked up the win for Cape, while Trevor Jaco took the loss.
Austin Atchley went 4 for 5 for Cape. Cole Blanton had three hits for Jackson.
Cape Girardeau's Lars Monia needed 18 minutes, 0.63 seconds to cover the 5-kilometer course at the 23rd annual Capaha Classic run.
Desmond Howard was second (19:59.25), followed by Jared Saylor (20:05.65).
Ashley Shmittzehe was the top female finisher, crossing the line in 23:19.36. Chellie Jannin was second (24:07.37), followed by Paula Castleman (26:14.30).
