Alvarez given second all-American recognition

Southeast Missouri State University pitcher Tim Alvarez picked up his second all-American honor Tuesday after being picked for the all-American third team from the National College Baseball Writers Association.

Alvarez, recently taken by the Giants in the 36th round of the Major League draft, also received third-team All-American honors from the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Pennington chosen for league's all-star team

Former Southeast Missouri State University pitcher Todd Pennington was selected as a member of the north squad in the South Atlantic League all-star game.

Pennington is 1-1 for the Lake County Captains, a Class A team in the Indians organization. Pennington has 10 saves in 12 chances and a 0.86 ERA. Pennington has been striking out batters at an impressive rate with 44 strikeouts in 21 innings of work.

The game, which will feature nine players from Pennington's Captains team, will be June 24 in Lexington, Ky.

Southeast Missouri State University's softball team signed two junior-college players to national letters of intent Tuesday.

The Otahkians signed pitcher Amy Fahnestock and infielder Victoria Torrez. Fahnestock was 18-4 last season at Wabash Community College in Mount Carmel, Ill., and was the MVP of the Great Rivers Athletic Conference.

Torrez played infield for Cypress Junior College in Cypress, Calif., where she hit .375 with a team-record 72 RBIs. Torrez was a member of the all-Orange County Empire Conference and will play third base at Southeast.

Eaker fires his fourth hole in one at Kimbeland

Jesse Eaker of Cape Girardeau sank his fourth career hole in one at Kimbeland Country Club.

Eaker used a 6-iron to ace No. 18, a par 3 playing 130 yards. Witnesses were Ray Wilhelm, Craig Hutson and David Thompson.
