Scorpions win SIU tournament

The Kohlfeld Scorpions rugby team opened its summer season with a tournament win at the SIU tournament in Carbondale, Ill., over the weekend.

The Scorpions used a pair of lopsided victories (29-17 and 48-0) in the first two rounds to set up a championship matchup with the host SIU Barbarians. With the help of a strong performance throughout the roster, the Scorpions defeated the tournament favorites 39-5. Scorers for the Scorpions included Alan Claus, Joey Hann, Marc Harris, Ben Woodicker and T.J. Ebner.

The Scorpions next match will be June 28 at the Bootheel tournament which they will host at Arena Park.

Three tie for medalist at WGA event

Beth Mapes, Linda Tewis and June Kang tied for medalist in the Women's Golf Association event Thursday at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Blind holes was the play of the day.

The winner in nine-hole play was Iris Ford. Donna VanMatre finished second in nine-hole play and Janet White and Judi Brey tied for third.

On Saturday the team of Robyn Young, Susan Rosenthal, Jean Byrd and Karen Grebing won the Ladies Memorial Golf Tournament at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. Joan Morgan, Mary Jane Eftink, Marlena Jones and Sarah Cochrane finished second in the tournament, and Phyllis Seabaugh, Joyce Kuntze, Catherine Weed and Shirley Talley were third.

Kimbeland member on winning team

Barb Johnson, from Kimbeland Country Club, teamed with Dexter's Judy Ellers to tie for the first in the championship flight at Hidden Trails Country Club's annual 2 lady scramble in Dexter Thursday.

The Kimbeland team of Peggy Fee and Betty Belote tied for third in the championship.-- From staff reports
