Youth rodeo finalsset for this weekend

Flickerwood Arena in Jackson will host the Flickerwood/Busenbark Youth Rodeo Finals on Saturday.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Saturday evening and will resume Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., following Cowboys Church at 7 a.m. The awards ceremony will follow the Sunday session.

The cost of admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 7 to 12 and free for children 7 and under.

More than 100 cowboys and cowgirls under 20 years of age from a three-state area will compete, jockeying for the top-five positions in each event in total points accumulated throughout the season.

Each session will include barrel racing, pole bending, team roping, calf roping, breakaway roping, goat tying, shoot doggin' and bull riding. Divisions in some events include pee wee, junior and senior classes.

The high-point junior or senior winner will receive the use of a horse trailer for one year; and other prizes will include high-point buckles and all-around saddles as well as jackets, duffle bags and bronc halters.

This marks the 12th year for the Flickerwood youth rodeo series and the second year in which Busenbark Trailer Sales has provided the top prize.

Devastation Fight Nightreturns to Brase Arena

The Devastation Fight Club's second card for the area in a three-month span will be Saturday night at the A.C. Brase Arena in Cape Girardeau.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the fights begin at 8 p.m.

Paul Farwig, the founder of the Devastation Fight Club, said this weekend's card will include Jackson native Kyle Newell, a 2002 Jackson High graduate who served in Iraq and took up mixed martial arts while stationed in the state of Washington for the U.S. Army. He has a 5-1 record, including wins Jan. 20 and 27 in Cape Girardeau.

Local cyclists competein Hillsboro-Roubaix

A contingent sponsored by Cape Bicycle will compete Saturday in the sixth annual Hillsboro-Roubaix event, a U.S. Cycling Federation sanctioned race in Hillsboro, Ill.

The race covers a 22-mile loop with multiple laps for different divisions.

Riders ages 19 to 40 from the Cape group who will compete in the 44-mile event include Colin Sheridian, Cody Nees, Ben Schuerman and Patrick Koetting. Riders in the masters group, 40 and older, who will compete in the 66-mile ride include Alan Gathman, Don Hinkebein and John Greenfield.
