The Jackson American Legion baseball team advanced to the championship game of an eight-team tournament in Paragould, Ark., with a 7-6 victory against Dunklin County on Saturday.
Alex Bolen, who broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI double, preserved the win by throwing out the potential tying run at the plate to end the game in the bottom of the seventh. Bolen fielded a single in left field and cut down the runner, who was trying to score from second.
Brett Thomas, Dylan Koehler and Clayton Baker all hit home runs for Jackson (20-10). Baker finished with two hits.
Joel Koening picked up the win with one inning of one-hit relief.
Jackson plays in the championship game at 7 p.m. today.
Cape Girardeau Ford and Sons American Legion Post 63 rolled to a 9-1, five-inning victory against Blytheville (Ark.) on Friday in the Paragould (Ark.) tournament.
Cody Livesay was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked two.
Livesay helped his own cause with three hits, including a double. Ross Moldenhauer and Trey Gardner both added two hits. Jimmy Obermark finished with two RBIs.
The Cape Girardeau Junior American Legion baseball team split a pair of games in pool play but finished as a No. 1 seed for today's bracket play in a six-team tournament in Paducah, Ky.
Cape lost 9-6 to Evansville (Ind.) on Saturday after it beat Bowling Green (Ky.) 6-4 in eight innings Friday.
Ross James took the loss against Evansville, allowing four runs and four hits in one inning.
Thomas Crocetti led the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Stephen Brennan also had two RBIs.
Justin Landewee notched the win against Bowling Green with two innings of relief. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
Crocetti went 3 for 5, while Ramsey Scott was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Cape (10-14) will play in the semifinals today at 4 p.m. The championship game is slated for 12:30 p.m. Monday.
