Scott Co. stopped short of a World Series shot

WILSON, N.C. -- Scott County was stopped a game short of the championship late Friday in the Babe Ruth World Series for 12-and-under softball teams.

Scott County, the Midwest Regional champion, lost 9-0 to Southeast Regional champion Jacksonville, Fla., in six innings.

Jacksonville led only 1-0 going into the fifth inning, then scored eight runs over the next two innings. Jacksonville out-hit Scott County 9-3. Heather Menz had two hits for Scott County.

Kentucky, Louisiana teams reach title game

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Shelby Co., Ky., and Plantation Athletic Club of Louisiana will play today for the championship of the Babe Ruth National Invitational for 14-and-under softball teams.

The teams will play at 9 a.m. after advancing through Saturday's double-elimination rounds.

In Saturday's games, Plantation defeated Heartland American 10-0 and Heartland National 3-2. Shelby County won three games by defeating Southeast Denver 5-0, Heartland American 4-3 and Heartland National 3-2.

Heartland American, Heartland National and Southeast Colorado were eliminated in the losses.

Percival makes her first career hole in one

Elvia Percival of Cape Girardeau recently sank her first career hole in one at Kimbeland Country Club.

Percival used a driver to ace No. 8, a par 3 playing 135 yards. Witnesses were Elaine Hayden, Cindy Luebbes and Judy Nordman.

Jones earns medalist title at women's golf event

Marlena Jones shot 86 to earn medalist at the Women's Golf Association's weekly event at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Play of the Day was Nassau. Leslie Steele (63) posted the low net for 18 holes, while Jones (31) had the low net on the front and Priscilla Kirby (33) the low net on the back.

Shirley Talley posted the low net total in the nine-hole competition.
