Capahas split twin bill against Illinois team
VALMEYER, Ill. -- The Craftsman Union Capahas split a doubleheader with Valmeyer, Ill., Saturday, winning the opener 6-1 and losing the second game 3-2 in eight innings.
In the opener, the Capahas (32-6) received five-hit pitching from Jason Chavez, who improved to 8-0. He struck out eight and walked one.
The Capahas supported Chavez with 12 hits, led by Josh Eftink with three. Justin Welker, Jon Payne, Dave Lawson and Adam Garrett all had two hits, while Welker and Payne both drove in two runs. Garrett recently joined the squad after playing with the Riverdogs, whose season is over.
In the second game, the Capahas had just three hits as Matt Stroup was the tough-luck loser. In 7 2/3 innings, he allowed five hits and two earned runs, with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Tom Bolen's two-run home run in the top of the seventh tied the contest at 2-2 and forced extra innings. Valmeyer (28-14) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to end it.
The Capahas play their final regular-season game and close out their home schedule Tuesday night when the St. Louis Sox come to Capaha Field.
Heartland 14-under team in championship game
The Heartland Nationals 14-and-under girls softball team won by shutout in a pair of Midwest regional games Saturday in Colorado.
In the first game, a 6-0 defeat of Southeast Denver, Maranda Schlosser pitched seven innings and struck out four with no hits. Wendy Eftink was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, and Mindy Hendrix and Chelsea Bradley had two RBIs each.
In the late game, Heartland Nationals beat Mount Colorado 13-0 after Kristian Burger and Courtney Walters combined for a five-inning no-hitter. Eftink and Burger each had two hits and two runs, and Henrix and Rachel Hendrix had two RBIs apiece.
The Heartland team will play today for the regional title.
Heartland 10-and-under squad advances to final
The Heartland Nationals 10-and-under softball team will play for the Midwest regional title at 9 a.m. today after it won a shutout Saturday in Colorado.
The Heartland team defeated Southeast Denver 13-0 behind Kendra Burnett's no-hitter. She also had three of the team's 11 hits; Danielle Gibbons, Hali Woodfin, Alecia Glauss, Kristen Powell and Brooke Glastetter each added hits.
Williams, Blechle win Chip-A-Ways flights
Linda Williams won flight A and Carolyn Blechle won flight B in the weekly Chip-A-Ways women's golf event.
Faye Harris won the play of the day, which was the longest drive on hole No. 9. Deanna Peterman had the day's low putts.
Jones medalist in weekly women's golf event
Marlena Jones was the medalist and overall winner in the weekly Women's Golf Association event at Cape Girardeau Country Club.
Mary Ellen Bean was second,Leslie Steele third and Keiko Fujiwara fourth.
Among nine-holers, Iris Ford was first andJean Mabrey second.
The play of the day was most threes, fours and fives.
Also recently, Bean shot a hole in one on No. 6. She used a 3-wood for the shot. Witnesses were Mary Jane Eftink and Mary Alice Regenhardt.
