Scott fails to qualify in national track meet
After a disappointing performance in the long jump Wednesday, Southeast Missouri State University senior Shelton Scott failed to qualify in the triple jump Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
Scott's best jump of 50-5 1/2 feet was more than 2 feet behind the lowest qualifier. The top jump was 54-6 3/4 by Auburn's Leevan Sands. Scott's jump also fell short of his qualifying jump of 52-2.
Cape, Jackson defeated in tournament openers
Patrick Slattery hit a towering three run homer in the first inning to put the Cape Girardeau American Legion team (2-2) on the board, but those were the only three runs they would get in a 12-3, five-inning loss to Sylvan Hills, Ark., Thursday in the opening round of a Jonesboro, Ark., tournament.
John Thies pitched a no-hitter through three innings before giving up a homer to Sylvan Hills' leadoff batter in the fourth. In that inning, Sylvan Hills batters were hit twice and walked four times to go along with five hits for 10 runs.
Jackson took an early lead in its opening game at the tournament before falling to Sheridan, Ark. Austin McDowell went 4 2/3 innings and took the loss. Sheridan jumped on Jackson for four runs in the fifth inning to seal the win.
Jason Meystedt and Trevor Thompson had two hits apiece for Jackson.
