Jackson golfer leads state amateur qualifiers
Mark Allen of Jackson shot a 1-over-par 73 at Dalhousie Golf Club on Monday to top the list of qualifiers for the upcoming Missouri Amateur Golf Championship.
Allen, a qualifier last year, was one of 12 golfers from the field of 31 to qualify for the state championship June 24 to 29 at Hickory Hills Country Club in Springfield. He finished four strokes ahead of Greg Rapp.
Rounding out the top 10 were Ben Brumitt (78), Mark McDowell (79), John Shock (80), Brandon Couch (80), Todd Obergoenner (81), Janszen Ringo (81), Mark Johnson (83) and Jack Pettet (84).
A playoff was held for the final two spots after six competitors tied at 85. Thomas Rainwater and David Strom parred the first playoff hole to qualify. Marvin Whitson, Tom Viers and Ken Ozbun will be alternates.
JAKES event designed to educate youths
The Bootheel Boss Gobblers will sponsor a day of youth outdoors education and activities Saturday at Deerfield Lodge near Jackson.
The JAKES program --juniors acquiring knowledge, ethics and sportsmanship -- is a National Wild Turkey Federation event for ages 17 and under that combines education, fellowship and hands-on activities. The event lasts from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Registration is encouraged before Thursday.

Variety of classes set during women's event
The National Wild Turkey Federation will present its Women in the Outdoors program Saturday at Deerfield Lodge near Jackson.
The one-day program, which begins at 8 a.m., will include optional programs in archery, skeet shooting, canoeing, Dutch-oven cooking, herb gardening, self defense, feather painting and other subjects.

Kimbeland golfers finish strong at New Madrid
Several golfers from Kimbeland Country Club placed well at the SEMO Ladies Association tournament Tuesday at New Madrid Country Club.
Cis Erlbacher was first and Betty Roth in flight C; Susan Vickery was third and Dixie Jones sixth in flight B; Harriett Drusch was third and Margaret Sanders fourth in flight A; and Vicki Long was fourth and Barb Johnson fifth in the championship flight.
