Johnson wins OVC's weekly volleyball award

Southeast Missouri State University's Emily Johnson won the Ohio Valley Conference's volleyball player of the week award Monday.

Johnson hit .356 and averaged 4.9 kills and 4.7 digs per game as Southeast pulled into a tie for second place in the conference standings with wins at Austin Peay, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.

The senior outside hitter had two double-doubles, beginning with a 21-kill, 20-dig effort at Austin Peay and finishing with a 17-kill, 22-dig outing at Tennessee Tech.

Southeast (17-11, 12-3) defeated Tennessee Tech 30-19, 30-20, 30-26 Saturday. Sarah Frost matched Johnson with 17 kills. Emily Scannell had 41 assists and 12 digs.

Woods wins club event at Lake of Egypt

Mike Woods of Jackson, Mo., won the Bass Busters of Southeast Missouri bass fishing club tournament Sunday.

Woods caught his fish on Southern Pro Tubes and Buzzbaits, alternating as weather conditions changed during the day. He located his fish on main-lake channel points with grass cover. A late-day buzzbait fish allowed Woods to cull his smallest 17-inch fish.

Derrick Bangert of Jackson was second. He caught his fish using a Pop-R topwater lure fished around grass edges.

Steve Ramey of Cape Girardeau won Big Bass honors.

Sunday's conditions were extreme. Heavy rains the night before rose the lake nearly a foot and muddied the water.
