Murray State takes two to win OVC tournament
PADUCAH, Ky. -- Murray State scored 30 runs Saturday and defeated Eastern Kentucky twice to claim the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament baseball championship and an automatic invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
Murray State used strong pitching in the opener to win 11-5, then banged out 26 hits in the second game to burn Eastern Kentucky 19-4. Central graduate Craig Ringwald picked up the win after going 5 2/3 innings. Ringwald allowed eight hits and three earned runs.
Southeast saw two of its players receive all-tournament honors. Infielder Gary Gilbert and pitcher Tim Alvarez represented Southeast on the team. Murray State pitcher Kyle Perry received tournament MVP honors.
Jones medals in weekly women's golf event
Marlena Jones was the medalist in Thursday's event for the Cape Girardeau Women's Golf Association.
There was a three-way tie for first between Jones, Keiko Fujiwara and Leslie Steele. In nine-hole competition, Betty Price and Iris Ford tied for first. Priscilla Kirby was second.
Cape Girardeau golfer sinks a hole in one
Brian Stevens of Cape Girardeau sank a hole in one Thursday at Cape Girardeau Country Club.
Stevens hit a 140-yard shot on the eighth hole using a 9-iron. The witness was Billy Birk.
Junior Legion team cruises past Florissant
The Cliff's Rent-to-Own Junior American Legion team defeated Florissant 11-1 in a Jackson tournament Saturday.
Tyrone Reece struck out six and gave up five hits in the win. Matt Hellrich was 3-for-4, and Scott Breuckner was 2-for-4.
