Groves named Big 12 athlete of the week

Loren Groves, a 2004 graduate of Scott City High School, was named the Big 12 athlete of the week after her performance at the Wildcat Invitational track and field meet.

Groves, a junior at Kansas State University, set a school record with a toss of 69-11.50 in the women's weight throw. Her previous season best was 66-10.

Vieira sweeps five events

Gabriela Vieira won all five events that she competed in at the USA Swimming regional IMX challenge in St. Louis recently.

Vieira, 10, won the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.

Other top Gators finishers were Kevin Douglas, who won the 100 freestyle in the 9 and 10 division, while Austin Hobbs won the 200 individual medley in the 9 and 10 division.

Shock girls team finishes second

The Jackson Shock fifth-grade girls basketball team took second at the Chaffee Invitational recently.

Team members were: Tessa Johnson, Madison Beussink, Kayla Keith, Sarah Blanton, Shelby Starzinger, McKinzie Scott, Jordan Pruitt, Rachel Crites, Teagen Schnurbusch and Mashanda Reed.
