Basketball

  • Alumni tournament: The Scott City Park Board will host the 22nd annual men's alumni basketball tournament on March 23 and 24. Team captains will need to pick up a roster form and return it by Monday. The field is limited to the first eight teams. Info: (573) 264-3411.

Football

  • Jackson youth signups: Jackson Area Youth Football will have its spring signups March 31 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jackson Football Complex. Varsity is for players in grades 5 and 6, while JV is for players in grades 3 and 4. All equipment except shoes is provided. A preseason players camp will run three weeks, with varsity times from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and JV times 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Golf

  • Joe Uhls Memorial Tournament: The fourth annual Joe Uhls Memorial Golf Tournament and Banquet, which raises money for the Southeast Missouri State baseball program, will be April 9. The golf tournament will begin at noon at Bent Creek Golf Club in Jackson, while the banquet is set for 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Cape Girardeau. Former Cardinals and Cubs standout reliever Lee Smith is tentatively scheduled to be the featured speaker at the banquet, which includes a silent auction and dinner event. Other former Cardinals expected to attend include Whitey Herzog, Tom Pagnozzi, Todd Worrell and Danny Cox. The four-man scramble golf event is open to the first 32 teams that register. Registration at the Home Run level is $600, while Grand Slam level registration is $1,000. All golfers will receive tournament gifts and various apparel, an official Southeast baseball team hat and banquet tickets. Grand Slam participants will also receive additional gifts as well as preferred seating at the banquet. Individual banquet tickets are also available for $20.   • St. Joseph tournament: The fourth annual St. Joseph Chargers Golf Classic is scheduled for April 27 at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course. The event raises funds for St. Joseph Catholic School in Scott City. The registration fee is $85 per player and includes cart, greens fees, lunch, dinner and beverages. The format is a four-person scramble. The registration deadline is April 16. Info: (573) 264-2600.

Miscellaneous

  • Basketball trip: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department's inaugural Memphis Grizzlies Basketball Outing is Saturday. The Grizzlies play the Chicago Bulls at 7 p.m. The bus leaves at 1 p.m. and arrives around 4 p.m., allowing time to check out Beale Street. Participants may bring coolers -- no glass containers, though -- and will be responsible for their own meals. The cost is $55 per ticket. Info: Jared Tanz, 335-5421.

  • Hunter education: The Missouri Department of Conservation has a hunter education class planned for 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. March 24 at the First Assembly of God Church gym, 312 Dearborn St. in Scott City. The class is open to those 11 and older. Registration will be done on-site.
  • Archery event: The Four Corners Archery Club in Bollinger County will hosts its second annual Coon Shoot on March 31. Registration is 6 to 8 p.m. with the event beginning at dark. The event will feature three classes: compound, women's and traditional. Shooters need to bring flashlights and wear hunter orange. The registration fee is $10.   • Youth clinic: The Missouri Department of Conservatiion is offering a turkey hunting clinic for youths on March 24 at the Apple Creek Conservation Area for 20 students. The clinic is part of the Hunting Skills University curriculum and will be hands-on with interactive scenarios and shotgun patterning. Applications must be accompanied by a $25 deposit that will be returned at the completion of the course. Info: (573) 290-5730.

Running

  • Run for a Child: The Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children and Southeast Missouri Hospital are sponsoring the second annual Run for a Child on March 24. The event includes runs of 1 mile, 5 kilometers and 10 kilometers. The run, set for 8 a.m., will start and finish at HealthPoint Plaza in Cape Girardeau. The entry fee is $12 in advance and $15 on race day. The 1-mile fun run is free without a T-shirt. Proceeds benefit CASA services in training and supporting volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in Southeast Missouri. Info: 335-1726.

Soccer

  • CAYSA registration: The Cape Area Youth Soccer Association will offer pre-registration for the fall season from 9 a.m. to noon April 14 at the Shawnee Soccer Park concession stand. Anybody planning to play soccer in the fall of 2007 can register at this time and be assured of being placed on a team. The cost is $20 for pre-kindergarten and $30 for grades 1 through 8. CAYSA offers family discounts for those that have more than one child playing.

Softball

  • Managers meetings: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department's softball leagues for 2007 will be forming soon. Managers meetings have been set for the following dates: today for coed and men's leagues; today for church league; and March 22 for girls and women's fast-pitch leagues. Swimming

Track and field
