Basketball

  • Doctors-Lawyers game: The 14th annual Doctors-Lawyers Basketball Showdown is scheduled for 5 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Central High School gym. Proceeds benefit Community Counseling Center Foundation. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children under 12. A postgame party is planned for Marquette Bistro and Deli. Tickets are $20 and include food, beverage and silent auction as well as admission to the game. Tickets can be purchased at any Community Counseling Center location, Cape County Medical Society or from any Community Counseling Center Foundation board member.
  • Free throw tourney: The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship will take place 1 p.m. Sunday at Immaculate Conception in Jackson. The event is open to boys and girls ages 10 to 14. The annual contest affords local winners the opportunity to advance through district and state competitions. Boys and girls ages 10 to 14 may participate. Gymnastics

  • Southeast benefit luncheon: The Southeast Missouri State women's gymnastics program will have its fifth annual Outback Steakhouse luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 24. Fans will have the opportunity to dine with Southeast coaches and athletes, with proceeds going toward the gymnastics program. Cost is $30 for two tickets. Info: (573) 651-2604.

  • Eagle Day: The Mingo Wildlife Refuge will host a Eagle Day on Saturday. The event is being offered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Spotting scopes will be available at Mingo and Duck Creek Conservation Area. and staff and volunteers will assist the public with viewing wild eagles. Live demonstrations will be given for free by the World Bird Sanctuary at the Mingo maintenance shot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Info: Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, (573) 222-3589, or Missouri Department of Conservation, 573-290-5730.

Soccer

  • Referee clinic: An Entry Level Soccer Referee Clinic is being offered by the Cape Area Youth Soccer Association, the Jackson Area Optimist Soccer Association and the Southeast Missouri Referees Association. Sessions are 6 to 10 p.m. March 2, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 3 and 1 to 5 p.m. March 4. River Eagle Distributing, 2346 Rust Ave., will be the location. The cost is $20, plus $25 to register for the U.S. Soccer Federation. Participants must be at least 14, and class will be limited to 25 people. Info: Gene Pulley, 335-5901 or (573) 450-4524.
  • CAYSA registration: The Cape Area Youth Soccer Association will hold spring registration sessions noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Nearly Perfect Shoes and Kick's Soccer Shop. Registration is open to children from 4 years old through eighth grade. Registration forms also may be obtained at Kick's Soccer Shop or Nearly Perfect Shoes and mailed in. The cost is $20 for pre-kindergarten and $30 for first through eighth grades. The spring season will begin on the second weekend in March and end in early May. The last day to register for spring soccer will be Feb. 9. Any form received after Feb. 9 will be placed on a waiting list with no guarantee of being placed on a team. CAYSA will provide T-shirts and socks to all players. Players must provide their own shorts and shin guards.

Softball

  • Southeast winter clinics: The Southeast Missouri State softball program is offering its annual winter clinics for girls ages 8 through 18 at Houck Field House. Remaining sessions: Saturday and Sunday (1 to 4 p.m. each day for pitching/catching/hitting); and Feb. 10 and 11 (9 a.m. to noon each day for catching/hitting/defense/short game). Volleyball

  • Coed tournament: The 10th annual Osage Invitational Coed Volleyball Tournament, conducted by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, will be Feb. 11.
