Football

Youth league registration: The final JAYF youth football registrations will be 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 21 at Jackson City Park pavilion No. 1. Levels are freshman tackle for students in grades 2-3; junior varsity for students in grades 4-5; and varsity for students in grades 6-7. Players need to be present. Cape youth league: Registration for Cape Youth Tackle Football will be 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 28 and Sept. 4 in Capaha Park at the corner of Perry Avenue and Broadway. The league is open to boys in fifth, sixth and seventh grades. Info: Jeff Brine, 334-6075.

Flag football: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department is accepting teams for its seventh annual Adult Flag Football League. Registration deadline is Sept. 10. Manager's meeting is 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at Osage Community Centre. League will begin Sept. 23 and include three divisions. Games will be played Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons at Arena Park. Season lasts seven or eight weeks and ends with Flag Bowl '04. Teams may consist of seven players. Cost is $189 per team. Info: Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, 335-5421.

Golf

Tempo clinic: Southeast Missouri State University golf coach Carroll Williams and Chris Schneider, the PGA golf professional at Arena Golf, are conducting a clinic centering around tempo and rhythm regarding ball striking. There will be two more clinics, both consisting of two sessions and a total of four hours instruction: Aug. 17 and Aug. 20; Aug. 24 and Aug. 28. Cost is $150 per clinic, which includes a copy of the book Tour Tempo by Jon Novosel, a copy of tones on CD, range balls for the clinic and a video of swing and drills. Benefit tournament: The Community Counseling Center Foundation's fifth annual Benefit Golf Tournament will be 12:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at Cape Girardeau Country Club. The event is an 18-hole, four-person shamble to benefit the Community Counseling Center, a not-for-profit provider of mental health care. Fee is $100 per player. Central Booster Club picnic: The Cape Girardeau Central All-School Booster Club will host its annual Back-To-School Fall Sports Picnic Aug. 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the commons area at Central High School. Hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, drinks and tableware will be provided. Families should bring the following according to the first letter of their last name: A through J, salad or vegetable; K through N, chips; O and P, sliced onions and/or tomatoes; Q through Z, dessert. Southeast basketball/track barbecue: For the third year in a row, a barbecue to benefit the Southeast Missouri State University men's basketball and men's and women's track teams will take place 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day Aug. 19 to Aug. 21 outside Country Mart in Jackson. The available items include full sides of smoked pork ribs for $9.99 each, pork steaks for $1.99 each, whole bone-in Boston butts for $12.50 each, boneless sliced butts for $3.99 per pound, whole barbecue chickens for $3.99 each and Johnsonville Bratwurst or barbecue pork sandwiches for 99 cents each. Canned soda will be available for 35 cents each. To avoid long lines, food can pre-ordered by calling the basketball office at 651-5030 or Country Mart at 243-8171.

Indian Insider Kick Off Party: The third annual event, a fundraiser for Southeast Missouri State University's football program, will be 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the A.C. Brase Arena Building in Cape Girardeau. The event will include hors d'oevres from Port Cape Girardeau, a full open bar, dancing to the live band "Fantasy" from St. Louis and a chance to win cash and prizes totaling more than $5,000. Running

Jackson Homecomer: The seventh annual Jackson Parks and Recreation Department's Jackson Homecomer 5-kilometer race is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 17. Softball

Coed fall league: The Perryville Parks and Recreation Department is accepting teams for an adult coed slow-pitch league that will begin in early September. Participants must be at least 17 years old. Team fee is $350, and deadline for entry is Aug. 31. League will consist of 16 to 18 games, plus a postseason tournament. Info: Brian Roth, 547-7275.

Triathlon

Trail of Tears: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department's 15th annual Coors Light/Trail of Tears Triathlon will be 9 a.m. Sept. 11 at Trail of Tears State Park. Fee is $27.30 for individuals, $32.55 for teams in advance; $32.55 for individuals and $37.80 for teams on race day. Also, $9 charge for those who are not USA Triathlon members. Course includes a one-half mile swim in Lake Boutin, a 15-mile bike ride and a four-mile run. Info: Jared Tanz, 335-5421.
