Anderson released by Calgary, goes to B.C.

Former Southeast Missouri State University football star Kelvin Anderson signed with the B.C. Lions on Monday, just days after being released by Canadian Football League rival Calgary over the weekend.

Anderson, the Stampeders' all-time leading rusher and Southeast's career rushing leader, was cut in a surprise move over the weekend as the Stampeders trimmed their roster in anticipation of this week's season opener.

In a statement on the Stampeders' Web site, Calgary coach Jim Barker said, "Cutdown day is the worst part of this business. You really it hate when it affects other peoples lives. Kelvin Anderson was a true Stampeder. He thrilled the fans of the CFL for many years, and we wish him all the best in the future."

In British Columbia, Anderson will be reunited with Wally Buono, his former Calgary coach who left for the Lions in the offseason. Anderson will have his first crack at Calgary when the Lions host the Stampeders Aug. 8.

Anderson, a New Madrid County Central High School graduate, rushed for 8,292 yards during seven seasons with the Stampeders, breaking the 1,000-yard mark all seven years. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry.

The 5-foot-8, 205-pound Anderson also caught 301 passes for 2,774 yards and scored a combined 76 touchdowns rushing and receiving.

At Southeast, Anderson rushed for 3,392 yards in three seasons from 1992 through 1994. He also holds the Indians' single-season rushing record of 1,371 yards and gained more than 1,000 yards in each of his three college seasons. No other Southeast player has ever compiled a 1,000-yard rushing season more than once.

Misipeka joins practice squad for CFL's Eskimos

Southeast product Keiki Misipeka, the second-leading rusher for the Indians last season, has earned a spot on the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos practice squad.

Misipeka played just one season for Southeast after transferring from Hawaii. He made the most of it by gaining 756 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns.
