2008 runner-up wins annual Trail of Tears triathlon

Nick Waninger won the Trail of Tears triathlon Sunday in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 40.2 seconds.

Wanninger, who finished second in 2008, defeated second-place finisher Barry Knight by more than two minutes. Knight, a Paducah, Ky., resident who has won the race 12 times, finished in 1:09:28.6, while Jonathan Shearon placed third in 1:12:07.85.

The 25-year-old Wanninger had the fastest times in the half-mile swim (9:25.80) and 4-mile run (20:02.35) and the second-fastest time in the 15-mile bike (36:07.25). Knight had the top time in the bike (35:45.55).

In the women's competition, Luise King won in 1:24.33.10 and placed 11th overall. Annette Jacobs finished second in 1:26:44.85 and Brigitte Kinnaman was third in 1:32:29.10.

The 26-year-old King had the fastest times among the women in the bike (42:40.15) and run (27:47.70) and was second in the swim (12:25.0). Kinnaman was the fastest in the swim (12:14.40).
