THE FEDERAL government took 21.2 percent out of the economy in taxes last year. In 1992, the figure was 17.7 percent. I received that information just recently from the Heritage Foundation. In Washington, the U.S. Senate has followed the House in attaching to an appropriations measure a provision imposing abortion restrictions on the payment of back dues to the United Nations. The provision would prohibit any U.S. payments to the U.N. from being used for international family planning groups that support abortion rights. The White House quickly announced that the president would veto the bill, even though the U.N. payments are a top priority. The Senate vote was a close 51-49...

Millions have flocked into the small Southern Illinois community of Metropolis during the past five years for a two-hour visit or more. Many people have returned, time and time again. Newlywed Teresa Eeftink took off her wedding rings to put on some hand lotion. She slipped the rings in her pocket and headed in Famous Barr for some lunch hour shopping last week. Without thinking, she stuck her car keys in the same pocket. While in the store, near the cosmetics counters, Eeftink reached in her pocket and pulled out the car keys. She had forgotten about the rings and didn't know that her cherished 1-carat diamond engagement ring had fallen to the floor...

BENTON -- Scott City High's baseball team came away with the Kelly Tournament title Saturday, beating the rain and two opponents in the four-team tourney. The Rams knocked off Kelly 9-4 in the opening game of the day, then beat Jackson 10-8 in the championship game. The third-place game between Kelly (10-2) and Perryville got rained out with the score tied 4-4. Jackson beat Perryville 11-5 to make it to the title game...

Things just weren't going right Saturday for Notre Dame senior Ryan LeGrand. LeGrand's girlfriend had been in a automobile accident the night before and then he started the day giving up nine hits in an 8-1 Big 8 Tournament loss to Eureka. After sitting out the second game against Hazelwood Central, Notre Dame coach Gregg Muench sent LeGrand up to the plate to lead off the seventh inning with the Bulldogs trailing 8-3...

Lana Richmond and Debbie Schmelz earned Southeast Missouri State University's top honors Saturday as the all-Ohio Valley Conference softball team was announced. Richmond was named OVC Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season. She led Southeast to a 34-10-1 regular-season record and its fourth straight OVC championship...

The 14th Annual Steamboat Classic Triathlon has been rescheduled to June 7. The triathlon was originally scheduled for April 26. The 4th Annual Children's Benefit Golf Tournament will be held July 24 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. The three-person scramble will have three flights. Cost is $65 per player. Cape Girardeau Senior American Legion and Senior Babe Ruth baseball tryouts will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Cape Central High School field. Any players wishing to participate for one of those teams this summer should attend the tryout.
